During my undergraduate study, I became very interested in the drawing process of Suminagashi, in which ink is floated on gelatin in a water bath before a monograph is created. I adopted this process and modified it, using a synthetic watercolor paper called Yupo. Traditionally, the suminagashi image is set to dry just after removing it from the water/gelatin bath. Using yupo, however, allowed me to continue working the images by hand due to its extended drying time. These images became studies in microscopic detail, abstractions that could be viewed like satellite photographs of alien terrain or microscopic details of cellular structures. I found myself very interested in this corollary between macro and micro so I used this body of work as an intimate series of paintings to explore this idea.
